Joe’s Original Mat Transitions and Hands On Cuing

An Evening with Joe

Taught by Cathy Strack

Join guest lecturer, Cathy Strack, for a talk on Joseph Pilates history in the Berkshires and Jacob’s Pillow.  Separate fact from fiction. Learn about the people and events that shaped Joseph Pilates life from Germany to America, with a special focus on his time at Jacob’s Pillow. Cathy Strack presents stories, as they were told to her, from former clients and friends of Joe, such as Tony the barber. Learn what Joe was like as a friend, a teacher, and a businessman.

Cathy Strack

Cathy Strack is a naturally curious person and always wants to know more about other people; about how they live and work, and what motivates them. In her first career as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor she developed the interview skills that have been useful for gathering information to write a book about Romana Kryzanowska.

To offset the physical effects of full time office work, Cathy became a personal trainer and Pilates teacher. She began practicing Pilates in 2001 and completed her first certification in 2003 at White Cloud Studio in Cleveland, Ohio. She owned a studio, Precision Pilates, for over 10 years. For the past 15 years she has taken workshops with teachers associated with the Classical Pilates method. This includes one fantastic weekend with Romana in Arlington, Texas. Most recently, Cathy completed the Power Pilates Bridge program.  Along the way, she realized there was very little information about the man (Joseph H. Pilates) who developed the Pilates method, and less information about those entrusted to carry on his teachings. The desire to know more about these people has led Cathy on a six+ year journey of research and interviews resulting in a biography about Romana Kryzanowska (Pilates protégé) titled Love All Around.

In conducting this research, Cathy uncovered a little known publication by Joseph Pilates and Frederick Rand Rogers named Return to Life Through Contrology. This fifteen page pamphlet contains new information about Pilates, along with endorsements by many of his clients. Cathy tells the story behind the pamphlet and offers it as The Pilates Pamphlet: Return to Life Through Contrology. (Insider tip, a new edition will soon be available: Jacob’s Pillow edition.)

A second book about the lives of other first generation Pilates teachers is in the planning stages. Just as with the first book, coauthor Carol J. Craig has thoroughly researched the lives of these people.  Cathy will begin writing this book immediately after completion of the Romana biography. It is tentatively titled They All Go To Joe.

The Pilatus Game of Stimulation™

Did you know Joe was also an inventor of games in addition to Pilates Apparatus? For the first time since Joseph Pilates was alive, Joe’s game, “The Pilatus Game of Stimulation™”, will be played! Small groups of attendees will play Joe’s original game of chance that he submitted to Parker Brothers over 60 years ago. (Historical note just 3 days before Sean was born).

Interview and Q&A with Sean Gallagher

Elaine Ewing leads an interview with Sean Gallagher with a focus on his history in pilates from the 1990’s-early 2000’s, as well as more recent history. Key topics from this time period will be discussed.  Attendees will have the opportunity to ask previously submitted questions pertaining to this recent pilates history in an open discussion format, with the goal of understanding and learning about recent historical facts and opinions straight from The Pilates Source™.

A Tour of Joe’s Original Property and Studio

Attendees will visit Joe’s Original property and studio, now owned by Sean Gallagher, in a guided tour format with plenty of time for questions and answers. Each person will have the opportunity to take photos of themselves standing in the well known places Joe stood, and to try the original Bednasium, and reproductions of Joe’s Resister, and Ped-O-Pul for themselves, as well as view vintage Gratz equipment, Joe’s original photos, apparatus, and personal belongings. An authentic Pilates experience that can only be found here, brought to you by The Pilates Source™.
