FALL SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Schedule Coming Soon

The Lost Art of Joe’s Four Airplane Boards™

Taught by Sean P. Gallagher and Elaine Ewing

The standard Airplane Board with two loops can be found in most studios today, but many are unaware that Joe invented 4 different airplane boards with very different sets of exercises with each one. We will begin the workshop with a lecture on the history of the 4 airplane boards, archived by Joe through drawings, photos, and film, and by examining one of his original airplane boards. We will then practice and study the sets of exercises that Joe taught on each airplane board and discuss how and when to introduce this rich body of Joe’s lost work to your students.

The Lost Art of the Roll Back Bar™

Taught by Elaine Ewing

Joseph Pilates invented numerous ways to use the Roll Back Bar throughout his lifetime. Exercises with the bar included flexion, extension, side bending, and rotation on the Massage table (precursor to the Cadillac) and the “Gym-in-the-Door”. This workshop will explore the dozens of “lost” exercises with the Roll Back Bar that Joe taught and practiced.  These exercises will prove to be a great way to challenge your students and liven up your classes.

The Science of the Pilates Kinetic Chains™

Presented by Sean P. Gallagher

The concepts and terminology for kinetic chain understanding has been around since before Joe was born (1871) so it is possible that he had either read or heard about it. Since the 1960s, this concept started to become popular and has steadily gained acceptance yet has only recently started to be used in biomechanics, physical therapy, rehabilitation and exercise.  Joe work and apparatus provides open and closed as defined in the literature but also a progression between the two as well. This lecture will explore the history of these concepts, look at the specifics of open and closed kinetic chain functional relationships to the

body, with a special look as they relate to the upper and lower powerhouses in their evolutionary progression for normal body function. How Joes apparatus and exercises not only support but facilitate the neuromusculoskeletal kinetic chains in the body. Lastly, we’ll look at what Joe developed in his system and hasn’t been addressed by science yet related to the kinetic chains.

The Lost Art of the Neck Stretcher and Head Spring™

Presented by Sean P. Gallagher and Elaine Ewing

This workshop will bring to light important distinctions in Joe’s original work- the differences between the Neck Stretcher and the Head Spring. Joe devised these two separate accessories off the Guillotine (as well as off of additional apparatus) because they work in significantly different ways, have different purposes, and provide different results. We will practice and discuss the variety of exercises archived by Joe using both the Neck Stretcher and Head Spring. You will be able to go home and start providing your clients with a deeper understanding of how to train their pilates bodies as Joe did for his clients.

Pilates 34 in 34™

Taught by Sean Gallagher

Sean Gallagher teaches a mat class each day based on detailed notes from a dancer who attended Joe’s mat class at Jacob’s Pillow during the summer dance intensive in the 1940’s. 34 exercises in 34 minutes, with additional, previously unknown breathing warm-up exercises that Joe taught as well as his specific cues not found published anywhere else and a little surprise as well.
